What Is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a glycosaminoglycan, which is the scientific term for a naturally occurring component that is part of the skin's matrix responsible for its youthful properties. In cosmetics, hyaluronic acid can also be found by other names such as sodium, hyaluronate and hyaluronan. Hyaluronic acid, the most abundant glycosaminoglycan in blood, helps to keep every part of skin intact, protected, and continually refreshed.

Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, which is a form of hygroscopic skin care ingredient that attracts moisture from its surroundings. Because of their potential to help improve hydration for all skin types, humectants are often used in water-based moisturizers, serums, and other leave-on skin care items. This is particularly useful for dry, dehydrated skin.

Hyaluronic Acid is naturally present in the body, with the greatest amounts found in the skin as well as in the eyes and knees.   • Skin-healing Properties: Because of its demonstrated ability to repair wounds, hyaluronic acid is a common antibiotic treatment or antidote for people with eye and joint injuries. Skin isn't an exception. Hyaluronic Acid is essential for tissue regeneration, especially skin repair. Hyaluronic Acid's moisture-binding properties and ability to preserve water make it a common ingredient in strongly moisturizing skincare products.
  • Anti-aging Properties: Because of its high hydration ability, Hyaluronic Acid is an important anti-aging agent. This is because well-hydrated and water-nourished skin tends to have less fine lines and wrinkles, giving the appearance of younger skin.
